Good Surf MovieJan 13, 2010
By E. Riley This movie was purchased as a gift for an avid surfer. In his words, "This movie is exactly what a surf movie should be." While the quality of the movie itself isn't fantastic, the overall content is good. There's plenty of actual surfing to maintain interest, and enough of a personal story to create a plot. The locations where this was filmed are beautiful, and will surely inspire even the most novice surfer.
... I liked it!Mar 31, 2011
By DD I am a easy going person, and not too artistic to tell you the truth. So i liked it, i am now really into surfing is always fun to hear people stories and see someone surfing. The scenography was beautiful, but i do agree in that they could have a lil more high tech equipment... but again is surfing. I don't like when people get so technical... just enjoy it!!!
Finding your soul amongst the breakAug 11, 2010
By BOCBALI One of great surf movies of all time. As per the movie, surfing is a very selfish sport...but when you give something back, the waves seem all that much better. Rob really gave back and we all benefit. + Indo is an amazing place and, except for the taxi happy ending buger picking scene, he does the place justice.

Weak story + terrible video quality = I'll PassDec 25, 2009

""Somewhere in the High Sierra""
I was greatly anticipating The Drifter, but the quality of the video is basically horrible.
It is way too over-saturated and the contrast was turned up to beyond max; apparently Taylor Steele was trying to make a basic surf film into an art piece, but the quality really gets in the way of the story. Perhaps it's just the DVD I havei; perhaps it's the way over-rated RED camera he used...whatever, it's nearly un-watchable.
The sound quality isn't great either, with the volume going up and down, depending on the scene. And the story is not very exciting, with Rob Machado's monotone voice droning on in the background giving it a depressing feel. He even walks like he's depressed.
We're supposed to believe Rob's trying to get away from it all? The cell phone ringing in the background, with people trying to bug him. Too bad, he has to surf for a living! The whole premise just doesn't really work and to be honest, the surfing shots are nowhere near revolutionary either.
So the bottom line is that you could easily pass on this one and not feel like you're missing anything. I'm very disappointed with the entire package, from the story to the video to the final production.

Artistic but boring! I rather watch paint dryJul 13, 2010
By Baron Cool idea, but come on. I can have a camera follow me around and surf a little bit here and there. I don't think anyone cares about the stuff between surfing and what "you" are really thinking.....lack of surfing and energy. I would not suggest this video, you have better things to do with yourself. Do a load of laundry instead and take a nap....what a waste of time!
Not trying to be negative, but this video isn't cheap and it sucks balls.
