The benefits of using this material far outweigh the extra cost; the silicone does not cause blisters as rubber is prone to, and the translucent colours are an attractive marketing advantage. In addition to this, silicone is denser than water which helps keep the feet below the surface, essential when kicking correctly. The material is soft, yet resistant to tearing and splitting, and is UV proof as well. The shape of the foot pockets has been the subject of considerable research, and along with the dedicated left and right foot fins, give exceptional comfort, and greatly reduce the incidence of cramps. The heel strap has ankle cutouts to prevent chafing and all the edges of the foot cavity are rounded for the same reason. The underside of the foot area has a non-slip tread pattern which makes walking round the pool less hazardous, and also means that tumble turns and diving are safer too. The angle of the blade surface relative to the foot is different to conventional fins, and has been designed to create the least possible resistance to the kick action. The asymmetrical plan shape of the blade allows the fin to be reasonably short and wide without the potential nuisance of the fins bumping together while swimming, or walking, another benefit of using individual left and right foot moulds. The "V" rails along the edges of the blade have a dual function, as well as ensuring the blade is sufficiently stiff to function effectively and channel water along the blade. Each of the 5 sizes has a different blade / foot area ratio to make sure that it is correct for the persons size. This means the smaller sizes have proportionally longer blades relative to the foot pocket length to create the correct thrust. | | | Features: | |

Tech 2 Ocean Fin ReviewOct 20, 2010
By Steven A. Toth First I would like to say Hydro has 2, Tech 2 models to choose from one known as "Ocean" or "Powertube", the other "Training" or "Swim", I found this confusing at first as it was not listed anywhere that there are in fact 2 versions of the Tech 2 fin. The Ocean version of Tech 2 can be identified by the word "Powertube" written in raised letters along the "V" edge of the fin and the word "Tech 2" in white below the T2 logo on the top of the fin. The Training version can be identified by the word "Training" written in raised letters along the "V edge of the fin and the word "Swim 2" in white below the T2 logo on the top of the fin. That said the differences are that the Ocean version costs about $20- more, however is a bit larger about 1" in length and a bit wider giving more thrust per kick, also the Ocean model has a wide clearing tube built on the bottom of the fin intended to drain out any sand that is caught in the foot bed. The Training version is intended for use as a training aid for swimmers to develop their kick and the clearing hole for of the Training version is a small cut out hole at the front of the foot bed on the top of the fin. I have used both Tech 2 versions, and there is a noticeable difference it the thrust delivered between the two the Ocean model giving a bit more. As far as fit I normally wear a US size 10.5 to 11 depending on the make of the shoe and ordered fins in size Large (10-11) the tip of my toes just touch the front of the foot bed of the fins, and the width of the fin is a little bit wider than my foot I normally take a shoe width "D", I would guess the fin is a width "E" so would not recommend it for someone with narrow feet. For me, although the fin width is a a bit wider than my foot the extra width does not seem to be a problem. The silicone material feels soft on the foot and swimming with the fin is comfortable. I intend to use the fin for bodyboarding and like the extra thrust that the Ocean model delivers I am also 5' 11" and 177lbs I would think for smaller lighter people they could use the training version and save a few bucks. Overall I am happy with the fins and would buy them again.

Expensive and hard to wearOct 14, 2011
By Jo We purchased two pair of these "ocean" worthy fins. Both of us are experienced SCUBA divers and love to surf regularly. We both found them to be extremely heavy and extremely inflexible, like there was no "give" at all. I felt like I was wearing a pair of cement shoes that were five feet wide. My husband is 6 feet, 190 lbs. and he felt similarly. We'll be looking into other brands to replace these.
